Installing Pupop

Pupop needs one script tag on every page that should show popups. Copy it from the Install section of your site's settings in the dashboard, where it already carries your site key.

<script async src="https://cdn.pupop.io/p.js?site=YOUR-SITE-KEY"></script>

Paste it into your pages

Put the snippet in the <head> of your site's template, so every page gets it. It loads asynchronously and never slows the page down, and if anything goes wrong it does nothing.

Add it with Google Tag Manager

  1. In your container, add a tag of type Custom HTML and paste the snippet into it.
  2. Set its trigger to All Pages.
  3. Save, then Submit and Publish the container. A saved tag doesn't reach your site until you publish.

Older snippets carried the site key in a data-site attribute. Google Tag Manager removes that attribute, so those snippets load without a key and show nothing. If your tag has data-site in it, copy the snippet again from the dashboard and publish the container.

Check the install

The dashboard marks a site installed once a page on one of its allowed domains loads the snippet, usually within a minute of the visit. Open your site in a browser to make that visit yourself.

Check again, in the site settings, looks for the snippet in your homepage's HTML straight away. It can't see a snippet a tag manager adds, so for those it waits for a visit.

To see what the snippet is doing on a page:

  1. Open the page, then your browser's developer tools, and go to the Network tab.
  2. Reload the page and filter the requests by pupop.
  3. You should see p.js, then /c/ followed by your site key. That second request is what marks the site installed.

No p.js means the snippet isn't on the page. A p.js with no /c/ request means the snippet has no site key, so copy it again from the dashboard. An ad blocker in your own browser can also block both, so test with it off.

Still not seen?

  • The page is on another host. Popups only load on a site's allowed domains, and example.com and www.example.com are different hosts. Add each host your pages use under Allowed domains, or *.example.com for every subdomain.
  • The tag manager change isn't live. Check the tag fires on All Pages and the container version with it is published.
  • A consent tool holds the tag back. Some cookie banners only let tags run once a visitor accepts. Pupop sets no cookies, so you can let it run before consent.
  • A Content Security Policy blocks it. Allow https://cdn.pupop.io in script-src, connect-src and img-src.
  • Your pages are cached. A caching plugin or CDN may still serve pages from before you added the snippet. Clear the cache.
